Music at Westminster: a word from Jesse Cann
“Our worship of God Should be in spirit and truth (John 4:23,24). It is therefore to be offered to the triune God: In the power and strength of the Holy Spirit, and guided by the principles of the Word of God in its content and form. Worship in spirit and truth is worship engaging the whole person: heart, soul, mind and strength (Mk.12:30). The affections or emotions should be fully engaged, as well as the mind and understanding. Our worship of God should be at the same time passionate and guided by sound doctrine.
The Bible calls for the singing of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (Eph.5:19); it calls for the use of instruments in our worship (I Chr.15:16, Ps.150); it calls for the use of choirs and masters of song to teach and lead in praise (II Chr.23:13, I Chr.15:27). It is the function of the worship leader, along with the choir or worship team, to assist the congregation to seek the face of God: to come into the very presence of the living God, through the pouring out of our hearts before Him in worship and praise. As a worship leader, it is the longing of my heart that all who have come to worship the Lord will feel his presence and nearness, and His delight in their praise.”
A Word on Styles of Music
“Westminster embraces both the historic hymnody of the Christian Church, as well as modern praise and worship music. True worship music is not limited to a time or style, but transcends both, and is given from heaven above to lead our hearts toward home. Come and join us in worship Sunday morning!”
